The Flyer

Leading Irish suffragist and feminist Hanna Sheehy Skeffington was intensely involved in the movement in support of the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War in the Thirties. She chaired the Womens’ Aid Committee, fundraising in particular for the Irish men fighting in the International Brigades in what was colloquially known as the Connolly Column. In the chapter ‘equality has been denied us…’ her efforts to raise money and awareness of the situation of Irish men in the Spanish Civil war struggle and the activism of other Irish women is described. Sheehy Skeffington’s archive contains much ephemera, such as members cards, meeting notices and political posters which helps to illuminate a hidden history the role of Irish women in support of  the Spanish cause in the 1930s.
